Our story
The Huuva´s
“We are foodie people, arctic lifestylers, creators, visionaries and storytellers”
— Henry & Pia Huuva (and the Huuva Crew)
Sustainability is not just a word to us – it’s a way of being.
Sámi philosophy and way of life teaches us to tread lightly across the land, leaving as few "footprints" as possible. These values, passed on from generation to generation, shape everything we do at Huuva Hideaway. This is more than a visit. It’s a journey into Sámi life – authentic, regenerative, and unforgettable.
Huuva Hideaway is a family-run sanctuary in Liehittäjä, located in the heart of Sápmi and Swedish Lapland. Here, we invite you to explore Sámi culture through immersive experiences that reflect our way of life – grounded in tradition, respect for nature, and sustainability.
We welcome guests from December to March and June to September, offering everything from day visits to extended stays in our cozy Ájtta Lodge. Whether you’re a culture enthusiast, a family seeking meaning in your travel, or simply a nature lover, there is something here for you.
Our offerings include traditional Sámi meals, storytelling, craft workshops, and the chance to witness the magic of the Northern Lights. But more than that, we aim to create a deeper connection – to land, to people, and to the values that guide us.
Since 2010, we've been shaping our dream in the heart of Swedish Lapland – beginning with small-scale, soulful stays at the Ájtta Lodge and the Floataway Cabin. From 2014 to 2019, we also ran Restaurant Utblick on top of the nearby Luppio Mountain – a White Guide awarded destination, celebrated for its panoramic views, great hospitality and Arctic-inspired cuisine.
Over the years, we’ve learned what truly matters: connecting with people, sharing everyday Sámi life, traditions, knowledge, and storytelling, and offering unforgettable taste experiences rooted in nature and culture.
Today, we continue this journey – still personal, still sustainable, still close to the land – by welcoming you to unique, year-round experiences in Liehittäjä, Swedish Lapland.
What we believe in:

The hosts
At Huuva Hideaway, you’ll be welcomed by Pia, Henry, their daughter Maja, and the rest of the team - your local hosts in the heart of Swedish Lapland. With warm and open hearts, genuine hospitality, and big smiles, they’re here to share stories of Sámi heritage, Swedish traditions, and everyday life around the Arctic Circle.
Whether it’s around the fire, during a meal, or out on a kick-sled ride - their passion for Sámi culture and Arctic living shines through every experience.
Liehittäjä - Tiny with a Big Heart
We like to call it a village, but with just around 23 year-round residents – most of us sharing the surname Huuva – Liehittäjä is more of a close-knit homestead in the far north of Sweden.
The name Liehittäjä comes from old Finnish and means “Seductive” - and honestly, we couldn’t agree more.
Despite its size, Liehittäjä is full of creative energy and entrepreneurial spirit. We’re home to seven unique small businesses all rooted in local culture and Arctic life:
Mestersnickerier (master craftsmanship in wood)
Erica Huuva Design (award-winning Sámi jewellery designer)
Majas Motorhuuvar (musician, artist and local storyteller)
Huuva Förlag (independent local publisher)
Huuvagården (catering business)
Jaktpartners (hunting dogs & outdoor expertise)
Huuva Hideaway - authentic Arctic and Sámi experiences
Welcome to our world - where nature, tradition, and creativity meet in the heart of the north.
Fun fact: there are 24 saunas here, but only 23 year-round residents. That’s how seriously we take relaxation here in Swedish Lapland. Some of these saunas are available to enjoy when you book a stay or package with Huuva Hideaway.
Liehittäjä our village sits quietly by Lake Liehittäjäjärvi, nestled in a forest of birch and fir. It stretches along a gravel road between two of the north’s great rivers - the Torne River and the Kalix River - forming a natural ridge that’s rich in beauty and Sámi heritage.
Getting here is part of the adventure – winding roads through untouched Arctic nature, no matter the season.
Keep your eyes open for the yellow road sign that says Huuvavägen – that’s your turnoff to unforgettable food experiences at our seasonal outdoor restaurant, where Arctic flavors meet forest views.
